IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Free help for individuals and families earning $67,000 or less, people with disabilities, and those with limited English.

IRS-certified volunteers prepare basic tax returns and electronically file them for you.

Low-Cost (and Easy) Online Filing Options

TurboTax Free File

  • If you only need to file a simple Form 1040, TurboTax allows you to file electronically for free.

  • Advantages:

    • File from your own computer — no mailing forms.

    • Automatically stores your information for next year's return.

United Way VITA Programs

Locations in: Metropolitan Dallas, Denton County, and Tarrant County

United Way joins with local organizations to offer free tax help.

  • Available to individuals and families earning under $67k.

  • Services include:

    • Filing current and past-year tax returns

    • Non-resident tax returns

    • ITIN renewals

  • Virtual and in-person options (often at public libraries, usually no appointment needed).
